Hair Transplant For Women
Most women are used to shedding hair. It is apparent when you brush your hair, in the shower, and perhaps even on the bathroom floor. So when is hair loss in women a reason for concern? Typically women will lose between 50-100 hairs per day. This is most obvious in women with long hair. When you are shedding more than 150 hairs per day, your usual part is widening, your hairline is receding, or you are noticing bald spots you are likely experiencing concerning hair loss. Just like men, hair loss in women can be due to a genetic trait passed on to you from your parents, but it can also be the result of hormonal imbalances, metabolic deficiencies, aging, or autoimmune conditions and even lifestyle causes like harsh chemical dyes and tight ponytails or braids. If you are experiencing concerning hair loss there are options for treatment including surgical and non-surgical interventions.
Women’s Hair Loss: Causes And Solutions
Heavy hair loss is very different from the typical shedding of hair in the hair growth cycle we experience normally. Excessive hair loss in women that manifests as a receding hairline, overall thinning, and even bald patches can be very alarming. This hair loss can really impact confidence, self-esteem, and mental health. There are many causes of hair loss in women including:
- Hormonal fluctuations such as those during pregnancy and menopause and hormonal imbalance
- Genetics (female pattern hair loss)
- Aging
- Metabolic disorders
- Autoimmune conditions
- Certain conditions like anemia or thyroid conditions
- Some medications and vitamin deficiencies
- Disordered eating and restrictive dieting
- Stress
- Lifestyle choices like chemically treating your hair or wearing ponytails or braids that place tension on your hair and follicles
Hair loss due to certain causes such as pregnancy, disease, illness, and vitamin deficiencies can be reversed when the event (such as pregnancy) is complete or by addressing underlying causes. But certain forms of hair loss in women will never resolve without intervention. There are surgical and non-invasive treatment options to address hair loss in women and promote healthy new hair growth including:
- FUE: Follicular Unit Extraction is the harvesting of individual hair follicles from the back of the head that are grafted to treatment areas in the scalp. FUE has a success rate of 90%-100% depending on the harvesting method.
- FUT: Follicular Unit Transplantation, or strip extraction, involves removing a thin, linear strip of scalp. Follicles are then extracted microscopically for transplant. FUT has a success rate of 95%-98%.
- Minoxidil: Commonly known as Rogaine, this topical/oral treatment can promote regrowth and/or slow the rate of hair loss. Minoxidil needs to be used indefinitely to maintain results.
- Scalp Micropigmentation: This tattoo technique creates the appearance of a fuller head of hair by adding points of pigment resembling hair follicles to the scalp. It is a cosmetic treatment for hair loss, but it doesn’t replace hair or slow hair loss. Micropigmentation doesn’t damage remaining hair follicles or skin.
- Advanced Injections: Injections leverage the natural healing properties of your own blood to stimulate inactive follicles and increase hair growth.
- Light Therapy: For patients in the earliest stages of hair loss, a low-level laser therapy hair cap can slow hair loss and stimulate some hair regrowth and improve density.
- Oral Topical Medication: Suitable for men experiencing male pattern baldness to stop hair loss and promote new hair growth.

Eyebrow Hair Loss: Causes And Solutions
For many women, it may seem like you spend years plucking, sugaring, waxing and threading to keep your eyebrow hair growth under control only to notice one day that your eyebrows have become very thin or that you suddenly have eyebrow hair loss. Now you find yourself filling in your thin or patchy brows to maintain a bright-eyed and youthful appearance. Eyebrow hair loss can be caused by:
- Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune disease that mistakenly attacks healthy eyebrow hair follicles.
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis
- Thyroid conditions
- Stress
- Hormonal fluctuations due to pregnancy or menopause
- Certain medications
- Over-plucking
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your thinning eyebrows and you want to address eyebrow hair loss, there are treatment options available. Surgical and non-invasive treatment options for eyebrow hair loss include:
- Minoxidil: Commonly known as Rogaine, this topical treatment can promote regrowth and/or slow the rate of hair loss. Minoxidil needs to be used indefinitely to maintain results.
- Eyebrow Micropigmentation: Also called microblading, this tattooing technique creates the appearance of fuller eyebrows by adding lines of pigment resembling eyebrow hairs. It is a cosmetic treatment for eyebrow hair loss, but it doesn’t replace brows or slow further hair loss. Micropigmentation doesn’t damage remaining hair follicles or skin.
- Eyebrow Hair Transplant: Similar to scalp hair restorations, donor follicles are harvested and implanted to create fuller brows.
- Medications and Supplements: Certain oral medications and supplements can stop eyebrow hair loss and promote new hair growth.
- Corticosteroids: If eyebrow hair loss is due to an underlying skin condition or an autoimmune condition, treatment with a corticosteroid can address the skin condition and reverse eyebrow hair loss.
